Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, located on the street. Bolshaya Moskovskaya, 106-A, built on the site of a wooden church in 1644-1649. Funds for the construction of the church were provided by the wealthy merchants of Vladimir Denisovs and Somovs, as evidenced by the inscription carved on one of the stones on the western wall of the building.
Short story
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin was one of several that surrounded the main square of the ancient settlement. In this part of the city, outside the city gates, wealthy artisans and small traders settled, who laid the foundation for the merchant dynasties of pre-revolutionary Vladimir.
The appearance of the Church of the Assumption reflects the traditions of folk architecture, which make it possible to imagine what the tastes of the customers and the skill of the performers were. Until 1725, the Assumption Monastery existed at the church, founded in the 12th century during the reign of Andrei Bogolyubsky. In 1754, the temple became the home church of the theological seminary. In 1955 - 1981, the church was restored according to the project of the architect A.V. Stoletov, restoring it to its original form. A relic of the church was a bell from 1650 with an inscription about the investors who financed the construction of the monastery. Unfortunately, it was lost in 1928-1929.when the Bolshevik government began to fight for the destruction of church bells. But back in 1923, the Church of the Assumption was entered in the register of historical churches, which saved it from possible demolition. Currently, the temple has been transferred to the community of Old Believers.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin - a striking example of the posad church
Most researchers agree that the Church of the Assumption belongs to the most significant monuments of Vladimir architecture of the 17th century. The soaring building with five onion-shaped heads rises majestically above the river. Klyazma and stands out against the background of urban development. The temple is extremely well-dressed and beautiful, its decor is made in the spirit of Moscow and Yaroslavl churches of the same period. The cube of the main volume is completed with a magnificent wreath of keeled and circular kokoshniks. A covered gallery (gulbische) adjoining the church and three porches protruding forward on faceted pillars create a picturesque volumetric composition. A hipped-roof bell tower is attached to the temple from the west. The original interiors of the Assumption Church have been lost, but the "skinny candles" kept in the Vladimir Museum give an idea of their patterning. These are hollow wax cylinders standing on high white stone pedestals. On the surface of the cylinder, hot colored patterns are applied, striking in their beauty and richness of colors. Along the top of the "skinny candle" is an inscription in Slavic script that perpetuates the names of "living rooms and industrial people", the creators of the temple.
