The Russian princes, beginning with Prince Vladimir I Svyatoslavich (c. 960 - July 15, 1015), had a pious custom to build churches in honor of their Guardian Angels.

Short story

So, in 1129, Grand Duke Yuri (baptized George) Dolgoruky laid a wooden church in the prince's courtyard, consecrated in honor of his heavenly patron, the great martyr George the Victorious. In 1157, the son of Dmitry Dolgoruky - Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky - erected a white-stone church on the site of a fragile wooden structure.

According to the chronicles, in the Middle Ages there was a monastery at the Church of St. George the Victorious, founded in 1153. In the 1770s, after the reform of Catherine II, which abolished a number of monastic cloisters, the St. George Monastery became a parish church.

In 1778, the church was badly damaged in a fire: the wooden ties burned down and the ceiling collapsed. In 1783 - 1784, a new Baroque church of St. George was built from bricks and ancient white stone. In 1847, a side-altar in honor of Prince Vladimir was added to the main building from the south, united as a whole with the bell tower.

Church of St. George the Victorious is located in the historical center of Vladimir, near Golden gate... In the foundation of the church, traces of the 12th century white-stone masonry have been preserved. The main volume of the temple is an equilateral quadrangle, completed with two eights.

The monastery is crowned with a bulbous dome, which rests on a cylindrical drum. From the east, a small apse is attached to the building, covered with a conch (semi-dome), and from the west there is a refectory and a bell tower with a hipped roof.

Platbands carved out of white stone, decorative "blades" dividing the facade, and a pronounced cornice make the St. George Church a typical example of provincial baroque. The vaults and walls are decorated with frescoes by talented craftsmen in the first half of the 19th century.

Relics of St. George Church

Under Soviet rule, in the 1930s, the Church of St. George the Victorious was closed to parishioners... The excellent acoustic properties of the church made it possible to organize choral concerts in it under the direction of the People's Artist of Russia E.M. Markin. In 2006, the temple was documented returned to the jurisdiction of the Vladimir diocese of the RCP, and the Choral Music Theater had to move to another place.

From that day on, regular services were resumed in the temple. In the cold aisle of St. George's Church there are ancient tombs where the mother of the faithful Prince Alexander Nevsky - Feodosia Mstislavna and his brother Fyodor Yaroslavich are buried.
