Museum history

The literary collection of the museum began to form at the beginning of the last century, thanks to V.D.Bonch-Bruevich. In 1905, a Russian ethnographer and revolutionary became one of the founders of the first Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy Museum in St. Petersburg. And 6 years later, he took part in organizing a Tolstoy exhibition at the Moscow Historical Museum.

The Literary Museum appeared in mid-1934. Its funds were quickly replenished, and in a few years more than 3 million documents, 100 thousand paintings, drawings and 130 thousand manuscripts and books were kept here.

In the 1940s, the museum collection underwent several difficult reorganizations. The exhibits were confiscated by the NKVD, and the museum was closed. In the 1950s-1980s, the collections were replenished at the expense of the gifts of the writers themselves and their heirs. Gradually, scattered buildings became part of a single organization. The museum united houses and apartments where famous writers and poets lived.

Ostroukhov's mansion

Inside the Garden Ring, in the historic center of the city, a beautiful wooden house with a mezzanine has been preserved. A typical urban manor house of the 1820s appeared in Moscow after a fire in 1812. At the end of the 19th century, it was owned by wealthy entrepreneurs - the Botkin brothers.

In 1890, Ilya Semenovich Ostroukhov became the owner of the buildings, who married the daughter of Peter Botkin. Ostroukhov left a noticeable mark on the culture of pre-revolutionary Russia. He was an excellent landscape painter, engraver, art collector and friend of the patron Pavel Tretyakov.

In 1918, the collections were nationalized, and the building was turned into a branch of the Tretyakov Gallery. In 1979, the Literary Museum became the owner of the old house.

Literary and art exhibitions are held here today. In addition, the museum staff organizes lectures and classes for all lovers of the artistic word.
